Abstract

Mississippi has experienced a tremendous growth in the automotive manufacturing industry, as evidenced by Nissan and numerous tier 1 and tier 2 suppliers locating in the state during the last couple of years. However, opportunities abound for even further development in this sector of the economy. This analyzes three of Mississippi’s prospective automotive assembly plant sites, termed “supersites,” from the standpoint of associated logistics costs. The analysis identifies the main factors that influence outbound logistics costs. In addition, the analysis also reveals opportunities that exist to improve the transportation infrastructure that would have a leveraged effect on site logistics costs for one or more potential “supersites.”
