CAVS Researcher Recognized for Teaching Prowess by American Society for Engineering Education

Lesley Strawderman, a professor of industrial and systems engineering within Mississippi State’s Bagley College of Engineering, recently received the 2020 Outstanding Mid-Career Teaching Award from the Southeastern Section of the American Society for Engineering Education.

The Outstanding Mid-Career Teaching Award recognizes faculty members who have made exceptional contributions to engineering education through outstanding classroom performance.

“It is such a joy working with our students at Mississippi State,” Strawderman said. “Receiving a teaching award validates my commitment to teaching and my drive to improve student success. I am grateful to work for a university that supports my teaching and values quality educational experiences for our students.”

Strawderman holds the International Paper Chair and serves as the undergraduate coordinator for industrial & systems engineering. Her research interests include human factors and ergonomics and the use of usability metrics in service quality improvement. She has taught courses in the areas of human factors, safety systems, work measurement, engineering statistics, and project management.

Her publications have appeared in journals such as Human Factors in Manufacturing, Transportation Planning and Technology, International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance, Journal of Emergency Management, Computers and Industrial Engineering, in addition to numerous conference proceedings. She is registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Mississippi and an active member of IIE, HFES, and ASEE.

Strawderman earned her undergraduate degree from Kansas State University before completing her master’s degree and Ph.D. at Pennsylvania State University. She joined the Mississippi State faculty in August 2006.
