Facilities and Equipment

At the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems, the Steel Research Center consists of a small scale steel production facility capable of producing steel from raw materials. Our steel production facility includes a small scale blast furnace, vacuum induction melt furnace, hot and cold rolling capabilities, and various analytical equipment. The 12” diameter blast furnace is used to study iron reduction reactions on the small scale. The vacuum induction melt furnace can produce 50 lbs of molten steel that can be cast in various geometries while retaining excellent recovery rates. The 2Hi/4Hi reversing rolling mill has a 14” face width allowing for hot and cold rolling of 12” material. Characterization of the produce materials is completed at CAVS’ well equipped analytical and mechanical testing facilities.
