Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to identify areas of industrial engineering and engineering management that provide rich opportunities to apply the next generation of intelligent systems. The system that this paper conceives is one in which a decision maker (engineer or manager) interacts and shares cognitive tasks with the computer(s) in a collaborative and seamless manner, so that the machine serves as a natural extension of the human. The purpose of this collaborative system is to design, solve, and/or manage engineering problems. Of particular interest to this research are problems within the realm of manufacturing enterprises. This paper characterizes the problem domain, provides thoughts for use in conceptualizing these systems, and describes rich possible application areas for initial pilots. It is beyond the scope of this paper to develop a detailed design or framework for the design and inner-workings of the system
