Abstract

This paper proposes the development of a suite of computational tools that focus on linking operational and physical process models so that higher performing manufacturing systems can be designed. Recent advances in manufacturing due to the implementation of lean principles will be constrained, pending development of the next generation of flexible capital equipment. The linkage of process and operational models will ensure that proper tradeoffs are done early in the capital equipment design. Literature findings from the semiconductor industry illustrate the value in this approach.
