Abstract

This research deals with the effect of measurement error on variables control charting schemes. Chart performance is measured by average run length. The initial phase of this investigation concerns the degradition in performance due to measurement error of various types of control chart (xbar and range charts). The last section of this research describes various sampling methods which may be employed to offset the effects of measurement error. Methods investigated include increasing the sample size, taking repeated measures, and a combination of both. Assistance is given to the practitioner in selecting the appropriate measurement error compensation strategy.
