Description:

Join us for a 10 week summer research program for undergraduates, running May 29th to August 5th. The 2007 Program is currently seeking applicants. Explore our site to learn about our activities and research projects.

From a scientific perspective, new discoveries are on the horizon related to a broad range of high rate examples: ranging from finite difference to finite element codes; from theory to experiments; from biological tissues to metals; and from atoms to meteorites. Furthermore, developing engineers that understand high rate phenomena is important. The lack of fundamental understanding of high rate phenomena in engineering is prevalent.

The need for high fidelity physics numerical simulation of car crashes, explosion scenarios, weapons impact and other applications is still a necessary research topic. Homeland security issues, lightweight vehicle designs, and vulnerability/lethality studies are arenas in which an understanding of high rate phenomena is warranted.

REU participants will be exposed to a wide range of activities designed to promote education and interest in graduate level research endeavors and to provide education and training in requisite skills. Participants will work closely with faculty and graduate student mentors on research projects associated with high rate material behavior. Faculty, graduate students, and participants will visit local engineering research facilities, as well as take part in various informal social activities. Students will be provided technical training and exposure to professional development topics weekly.

Stipends for 2007 are $4000; on-campus housing and access to university recreational facilities are included. Travel expenses for transportation to and from Mississippi State will be provided via airfare or mileage reimbursement.

Apply online today (final deadline May 22nd). CAVS strongly encourages the participation of individuals from the following under-represented groups: African-American, Hispanic/Latin Americans, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans and women.
